 Rodden Walks Series (2020)

I began this project during Lockdown in March 2020. I started taking daily walks to Rodden Fields on the edge of Frome. After a few visits I took along my sketchbook and spent time sitting, looking, listening, and drawing. It became a place to escape to. To sit quietly and contemplate the nature, sounds, space and colours all around me. On each visit I came to recognise and know this small peaceful area better. I noticed little changes. It has become a tranquil haven during these troubled times. I worked in a concertina sketchbook to begin expIoring a specific place. After a few weeks I returned to my studio and developed some of the sketches into small works on paper. I used a limited and for me slightly muted palette of colour. This felt right for the time. Small quiet muted works reflecting the quiet life I was leading. As the summer progressed I used some brighter colours and worked on two larger pieces. At this time I decided to continue with the project into Autumn and Winter to create a body of work charting a personal response to unusual times at a local place which brought light, space, and great comfort. The work has also been included in the Somerset Art Works ‘Somerset Re-Acquainted’ project which see’s artists all over Somerset responding creatively to their immediate environment.

Residency at Brisons Veor, Cape Cornwall. (2021) You can read about the residency here.
